Your piece can be published in the NEWS section of our site if:

  •  It's about a currently relevant event, trend, or person.

  • It's structured for maximum clarity and readability.
It attributes opinion statements by direct or indirect quotation.

  • It includes no ad hominem attacks unless in a quote. Even then it needs a good reason for including them.
It avoids emotionally or politically provocative language outside of quotes. The story expresses points of view explicitly with reference to supporting facts, rather than implicitly through the connotations of its language.

  • It attributes all quotes to named people or documents.

  • It attributes numbers to named sources.

  • If reporting on board decisions, it identifies how individual board members voted, their self-expressed reasons for their votes, and any other factors the writer reasonably thinks could have influenced their votes.

  • It makes agency as unambiguous as possible. The story is who did what. Agency is sometimes very clear, as in a board voting on an action. Other times it's murkier, such as in writing about economic, environmental, or political trends. But writing that aims to shed light on decision-making shouldn't obscure who the decision-makers are.

If you want to publish news on our site, an editor can help you shape your work to these standards.
